Raising The Bar ... In A Fashion ...

Hello Folks,
Last night was the Wabisabi Fashion Show – the 8th I believe.  It’s a charity event – all proceeds go a various number of charities in town.  It’s a great concept and one of the best live events I have ever attended. I think I enjoyed last year’s event a bit more – I thought the fashions this year were a bit more conservative and conventional.

That said it was held in a new venue – with a new concept and you have to tip your hat to the organizers for continuing to tweak and improve on a great thing – I am sure next year’s fashion show will be bigger and better.

Fashion is a strange thing – is it a trend or fad, is it clothes alone, is it certain people wearing certain clothes – it’s like that expression, ‘cool is not a look, it’s an attitude’. Is attitude the fashion?

I don’t know if anyone remembers Malcolm McLaren ... McLaren was born in 1946, attended several art schools in his late teens and eventually took up clothing design. He eventually opened a clothing shop, became interested in n alternative music scene was developing, changed the format of his clothing shop, started to manage a band that would become The Sex Pistols and his fashions then became the standard uniform for the followers of the new music scene called ‘punk’.

As manager of the band, they wore his fashions – so did the band and it’s music drive the fashion, did the fashion make the band and music because t was so extreme and different, did the attitude of the band make the music and then drive the fashion, did the fashion shape the attitude and drive the band and make the music, a combination of all these factors, none of the above.

I believe that fashion is driven by what I will call a ‘scene’. It starts in an urban center – it is always a movement of youth – it’s genesis in a small club – it involves a local band – the band adopts a stage persona that has a unique and distinctive look – the look is mirrored by the youth but they have their own interpretation – this in turn influences the band – the band tours locally – the scene expands – first within the urban center and then to many – fans identify themselves by wearing the same clothing and adopting the same look – the band breaks – a fashion designer takes the ‘look’ and refines it for general consumption  - the fashion breaks – models identified with fashion become famous – they in turn influence fashion by what they wear and who designed it ...a fashion trend, fashion designer and a super model are born ....

The David Bowie song Fashion captures it very well ...

Today this extends to rock stars and professional sports – I mean how many musicians and professional athletes are dating supermodels and wearing the most expensive of clothing and current fashion ... and by their ‘coolness’ of look confuse us that the look is ‘the attitude’ ...

Speaking of supermodels, I have always had a thing for Claudia Schiffer – I must say that has changed with the last two Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issues – it is now Bar Rafaeli – and who couldn’t love a girl named Bar ....

It was a combination of rain and snow here yesterday – I drove right to the end of Arches National Park - and by the time I had arrived, the increase in elevation – about 1000 ft. – and the fact I had traveled about 20 miles north, meant it was snowing.
Hiked through the falling snow to three arches – a beautiful day out there – I hope some of these pictures capture what I was seeing.

The winged menace could be heard everywhere – the snow prevented us from seeing each other – but we both knew the other was out there ... I have a feeling that the next fashion trend will involve crow feathers – lots of crow feathers ....

More later,

Phil
