I Have Nothing On .... Except The Radio ....

Hello Folks,

Recent hikes (relax – outdoor walks; not tax or premium increases) have exposed some chinks in the ‘arse’nal (no, not the sore butt), so it was off to Grand Junction, Colorado to procure the right tools to remain standing upright as opposed to crawling around on all fours ...  and isn’t that what evolution is all about ....

The raven crow beast was in hot pursuit all the way over and then he just vanished – obviously he was a tad thirsty – wonder where he went ....

Scott at Rim Cyclery (back in Moab) recently made me aware of a unique shell jacket design by Loki ...

The jackets have integral mitts and face shields – all combined with unique engineering in design and the use of materials to produce what may be the ultimate in all weather jackets. They aren’t cheap but nothing good in this life is – except for advice of course – well ... maybe criticism .... yeah, OK .... possibly opinions .... right ...

I checked the jackets out at the Grand Junction Loki store and I was impressed – more research required – I’ll keep you informed ...

Hiked (relax now ..) over to REI - and checked out the latest technology in walking sticks.  With that resolved, I was getting parched so it was time to track down the Rockslide Brewpub – which I eventually did ....

It was happy hour – folks ... let's face it, it’s always happy hour – you know what I mean – I ordered a Pale Ale and then a platter of wings, onion rings, veggies, calamari, pita bread and 4 dips.  This platter was so fricking big that it could hardly fit on the bar!!  There was no way .... but I gave it a good shot ....

I had another Pale Ale and then it was time to move on .... I gave the remains of the platter to two guys sitting beside me ... and I headed out ...  as I looked back while exiting, there he was ... the raven crow beast sitting with the two guys and hoovering the remains of the platter while giving me the single wing salute ..... you know if those two guys weren’t there ....

On the drive back I was listening to the radio and I heard a few things that kind of resonated with me and I thought I would share them,
1)
     a) Doug Fieger of The Knack passed away – My Sharona may be the perfect rock song next to Satisfaction – capturing all the elements that make such a song – a hook and lyrics that explore a rising frustration/angst, in this case sexual - and a beat that mirrors the increasing intensity of the song and the lyric – driving towards a real and metaphorical climax – ‘Always get it up for the touch of the younger kind’ – took the words right out of the priest’s mouth, Doug. Remember Weird Al’s version, ‘My Bologna’ ... Doug, you left us way to too soon ...

2)  b) Forty years ago, on the 13 February, Black Sabbath released their self titled debut LP – this was music that would later become labelled ‘heavy metal’ – this wasn’t dance music – this was the soundtrack of alcohol and drug bingeing, tattoos, body piercings, and constant profanity.  The punks ten years later would lay claim to this territory – uh, uh – mere posers – what for them was a ‘white collar’ fashion statement was the real thing for the red neck, blue collar heavy metallers .... and still is ...

3)  c) There was a piece on a new book, Black Hearts by Jim Frederick think My Lai Massacre, Lord of the Flies, Apocalypse Now and The Deer Hunter ... The book tells how, in 2005, four US soldiers raped and murdered a 14-year-old girl in Iraq, then killed her and her family, and burned their bodies. This is what ‘war’ is about and what war does – war meaning total absence of any moral base combined with absolute anarchy - this is the heart of darkness – and it doesn’t necessarily take a war – remember the bands of armed thugs roaming the streets of New Orleans only 12 hours after the levee broke – ah yes, when the levee breaks ... 'crying won't help you, praying won't do you no good' ...
4)
     d) Ever wonder if you measure up – well wonder no more – get the tape measures folks – it may be time to trade up ... or down .... now where is that Swedish vacuum pump ....

To quote verse 311 of the Krome Koan,

‘Politics develops more comedians than radio ever did’

Just outside of Moab the winged menace picked me up – and he was flying with a group of Canadian Geese ... great .... in search of a golf course no doubt .... hey, wait a minute ... I am staying beside a golf course .... the plot may be thickening .... along with the crow marinade .... and my waist ... revenge is a dish best served cold they say .. I am going to cook his goose yet ...

More later,

Phil
