Yesterday started off in the same overcast fashion as the last few days but by noon hour had turned into a brilliant blue sky sunny day.
I biked 9 miles today - the butt issue is getting a tad better - but it's still a relief to get out of the saddle - so to speak. Oh well - we'll just keep working at it. As usual, I biked out on Potash Road - this time on the lower end so I actually made it to the Potash Plant that gives the road it's name.
The road actually continues by the plant and then up and onto a plateau below Dead Horse Point - where I definitely want to get to this trip.
On the way back from the ride, I stopped adjacent to an area 'that had been prescribed burned' the previous year by the Bureau of Land Management so it doesn't get uncontrollably burned as a result of vandalism or careless campers.
These 'prescribed burns' used to be called 'controlled burns' until a controlled burn in New Mexico in May 2000, burned uncontrollably for 2 weeks! I was always curious about what the hell happened until I found out that the person in charge of that burn was Fire Marshall Bill - and if there are any folks reading this who don't know who Fire Marshall Bill is, check out this little clip,
The reason I mention all this is that the charcoal remains of the burned tamarisk are still standing and I love the look of that blackened wood against the red rock or the blue sky.
After that I hightailed it up the La Sal Mountain Loop so I could take pictures of the sunset from a high vantage point - 7500 - 8000 feet. It was a great evening for photos - a good sunset overlooking the high plateau of Dead Horse Point and Canyonlands National Park.
All finished off of course at the Moab Brewery - a great day.
If you look at this last picture, 'you know who' is flaunting it - don't worry - I've already started the crust for the pie ...
More later,
Phil
